Home Page Neolithic Forts Bronze Age Iron Age Christian Norman Modern Links & Virtual Museum The
Petrie Crown
is another example of the La Téne /
Celtic
style of metalworking, which
displays the REPEATING, SYMMETRICAL design so loved by the CELTS. Here we have
an object made of BRONZE
pieces which are RIVETED
together. There is a Bronze Band forming the
basic circular shape onto which are attached the
Circular Discs, ( on the
outer circumference ). These are decorated with the FAMILIAR
BIRD'S
heads, forming the centres of the
SPIRAL DESIGNS.
WITHIN this series of CONCAVE DISC'S
are a series of GOBLET
type pieces, which were PIERCED
/ CUT
out of a BRONZE sheet, and riveted together to form the "
CROWN
" itself. The Horn’s were again cut from sheets of Bronze, and FORMED / BEATEN /
ROLLED
into their CONICAL
shapes. The RAISED
designs were lined in, and the centre's have a decorative bead
SET
into them. The Sword is evidence for the FORGING of IRON, i.e. Iron heated in a forge, and over time beaten by the BLACKSMITH into a finely EDGED WEAPON. The CELTS were a " WAR LIKE PEOPLE", and HEAD HUNTERS. The SHAFT / BLADE TAPERS gradually to its point. The handle is designed to fit the hand of its SPECIFIC owner, and may? have had a decorative BONE set piece . These swords were meant to maime and kill, either in a SLASHING or STABBING style, i.e. SKIRMISH or HAND to HAND fighting. In many instances these swords were broken in half when their owner died, and either buried with them, or thrown into a lake as an offering to their GOD'S? . This Bronze Enamelled Pin consists of the Pin, topped by a SEMICIRCULAR BROOCH. It has two enamelled circles with one of the CELTIC SUN SYMBOLS on each of them, in BLACK / DARK BLUE enamel, ( today we would refer to this as the MALTESE Cross, or Chi-Rň Cross of the Christian Period ).The central LOZENGE / DIAMOND has an INNER Red Enamelled L./D. design surrounded by Orange dots, on a Yellow Base colour. The outer top of the " BROOCH " has two MOUNTED Semi Precious stones between, and above which is a ring attachment for a CHAIN?. This Celtic BROOCH could be regarded as a stepping stone to the PENANULAR BROOCHES of the Christian Period.
